Election Group Expose INEC’s Plot to Smuggle Simon Achuba’s Name as Running Mate for Yahaya Bello

A leading Civil Society Organization and Election Monitoring Group, Conscience Nigeria, has raised the alarm over a Surreptitious plan by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to assist Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate in the December 5, 2015 Supplementary Governorship election in Kogi Sate smuggle  in the name of a running mate.

Hon. James Faleke, who is Deputy Governorship Candidate to the late APC Candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu, had since declined been a running mate to Yahaya Bello during the December 5th supplementary election.

But the electoral umpire is under a strong allegation of smuggling in another politician from the eastern part of Kogi state, into INEC official documents and backdate same in order prove to the Election Petition Tribunal Sitting in Lokoja that Bello actually fulfilled constitutional provisions by running the Supplementary election with a deputy.

However, Section 187 sub-section 1 of the Nigerian Constitution is very emphatic and states in unequivocal terms that any Governorship candidate for an election will not be deemed to be duly elected if he fails to run the election with a Deputy. With Hon. Faleke’s letter to APC and INEC refusing to be Bello’s Deputy and opting out of the Supplementary election, political observers and legal pundits had wondered how Bello would beat the trap of section 187 of the constitution since he actually ran the election without a Deputy.

In a statement, the Executive Director of Conscience Nigeria, Tosin Adeyanju said his group is disturbed with reports from very credible sources establishing the fact that a former member of Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Simon Achuba from the Igala speaking part of the state (Kogi East) has been picked as the Deputy Governorship Candidate who purportedly ran the supplementary election of December 5, 2015 with Bello!

“We are terribly shocked with this development. This is corruption of the highest order and must not be allowed to stand”, Adeyanju said.

According to him, the confusing signal emanating from INEC’s position at the Tribunal point irresistibly to the fact that the commission is up to something sinister in its quest to rationalize the inclusion of Yahaya Bello as replacement for the deceased APC candidate, Prince Audu in the 2015 election. “Even legal pundits are at loss as to the evasive and inherently conflicting averments in the processes so far filed on INEC’s behalf before the Tribunal especially as it has to do with the deputy governorship candidate of the APC that ran with Yahaya Bello in the Supplementary election of December 5, 2015.”

While INEC had maintained prior to the Supplementary election that Hon. Faleke was Bello’s Deputy, a position disputed by Faleke, facts distilled from INEC’s response to the petitions filed by the PDP and Faleke suggest rather curiously that APC and Bello had nominated another Deputy Governorship Candidate in the Supplementary election without naming who that candidate is.

Impeccable sources within Yahaya Bello’s camp confirm that INEC’s position at the Tribunal was indeed a smokescreen or a scaffolding upon which a new name could be smuggled in, aided by backdated documents to support the case of Yahaya Bello.

Adeyanju illustrated his group’s stance with the scenario that occurred during the collation of the December 5, 2015 Supplementary Election at the State collation centre, Lokoja when an agent of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) challenged the nomination of Bello as Governorship candidate by the APC since he had no deputy as Faleke had withdrawn but the INEC National Commissioner from North Central, Amina Zakari responded that Faleke remained Bello’s deputy because his party, APC, had not withdrawn his nomination despite the fact that he had written to the electoral umpire informing it of his intention to pull out of the race.

“Unless the Party withdraws a candidate, his letter is not enough, and unless the proper channel is followed, which is through the party, he remains the running mate”, she said. So from where did a running mate suddenly emerge from when Bello had not been sworn in?

Section 187 sub-section 1 of the Nigerian Constitution states interalia.

“In any election to which the foregoing provisions of this part of this chapter relate, a candidate for the office of Governor of a state shall not be deemed to have been validly nominated for such office unless he nominates another candidate as his associate for his running for the office of Governor, who is to occupy the office of Deputy Governor.” Adeyanju added.

Adeyanju called on the leadership of INEC to as a matter of urgency investigate this corrupt plan within its fold with a view to bringing culprits to book.

According to him, the whole world is watching the political scenario in Kogi with keen interest and that nothing short of fairness and justice by the electoral agency would be acceptable.

TRASH Nigerian women rated as the most bleached women in Africa

Nigeria has been recorded as the highest country with the most bleached women in the world pulling a whopping of 77% this is reported by World Health Organisation (WHO). They ia also another report according to MediaTalkOut,naming Togo as the second most bleached country in Africa, with the total of 55%.

The skin bleaching trend is seriously getting out of control among our African women.-"Especially in Africa" MediaTalkOut reports, even outside the country,in far places like Dubai, business is booming for people who are selling.,, among other cosmetics ,skin lightening product. The said

"In our world ,one in every 10 dark skinned person is now patron to bleaching products, wheather consciously or not . Most of us have come across at least one lady who attempt to whiten her skin.  They are easily identifiable by uneven patched of dark skin fading away and the dark skin still retained by the joints, the elbows and knuckles. Those who successfully bleached lost mostly ghostly ,because even with the new skin tone on top. The is an underlying layer of dark skin that makes them look slightly off- colour.

Kogi APC in tight spot over Faleke’s rejection of deputy governorship

Political kingpins in Kogi State have gone back to the drawing board to reconfigure the state’s political positions following the final decision of the state’s Deputy Governor-elect, Hon. James Faleke to absent himself at next week’s inauguration ceremony.

The governor-elect, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Vanguard learned are at a cross roads over the push by stakeholders from the Igala speaking Kogi East district for the office of deputy governor to be zoned to them on the grounds that as the largest senatorial district they cannot be left out of the first two positions in the state.

Bello is from Kogi Central while Faleke is from Kogi Central.

My source was reliably informed by sources close to Faleke on the final decision not to partake in the inauguration ceremony scheduled for January 27.
“As far as we are concerned, Faleke is not the Deputy Governor-Elect to Alh. Bello, but the late Prince Abubakar Audu who won the governorship election before he died. Faleke is the only person who is qualified to inherit Audu’s votes because the ticket was a joint property.

“We are not bothered about plans for inauguration because it has no impact on us. Let them do their inauguration while we pursue our case in court. At the end of the day, the law will determine the rightful occupant of Lugard House,” they said.

The sources also informed that Faleke has no plans of disrupting the inauguration, saying, “as a man of peace, our principal has confidence in the judiciary to resolve the Kogi impasse.”

Given the determination of Faleke to abstain himself, the party it was gathered has commenced the search for a replacement for the office of deputy governor.

AD hails Buhari's anti graft war

The Alliance for Democracy, AD, has commended the anti-corruption programme of  President Muhammadu Buhari noting that the pervasive influence of corruption has affected the political and economic development of the nation.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary,  Ms. Olayinka Nola, the party expressed satisfaction at the manner in which corruption cases are being pursued but urged that it should not be selective.

It also noted that rights of the accused should be respected with strict adherence to the rule of law.

The party, however, expressed dismay at the news of the alleged missing budget document.

It noted that a budget is a critical tool of any administration and as such, if it is truly missing, it is an embarrassment to the nation locally and internationally and should be investigated.

The statement reads in parts: “We in Alliance for Democracy, the most vibrant and people oriented political opposition party wish to commend President Muhammadu Buhari in his determined effort to purge the nation of its endemic corruptive tendencies and recover stolen funds.

”It is a step in the right direction because there will be no meaningful development if cankerous corruption is allowed to thrive. However, this crusade should not be selective but should cut across all political and governmental entities and agencies including the private sector for it to be credible.”

“We shall continue to laud the good programmes of this administration but will criticise it constructively when necessary. We are also appalled at hearing that the budget document is missing. It is embarrassing if it is true but if it is not, we advise that the rumour mongers peddling this shameful lie should be investigated and brought to book”, it stated.

Shiites give condition for appearance before commission of inquiry

As the Kaduna State Government finally established the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that it promised would look into the clash between the Nigerian Army and adherents of the Shiite Islamic movement in Zaria in 2015, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, has given conditions to appear before the commission.

While noting that the Movement believes in the justness of its cause and the fact that the events that led to the setting up of the Judicial Commission were premeditated, they said they will only appear before the commission if its leader is released unconditionally, and the Nigerian Military and the Nigerian Police make full disclosure of the number of persons in their various detention centers and those they took to the various hospitals and the location of the hospitals to enable their lawyers have access to them.

A statement spelling out the conditions signed by the President, Media Forum of the Islamic movement, Ibrahim Musa, said while the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, has called for the setting up of an impartial and independent Judicial Commission of Inquiry made up of independent persons and members of the international human rights community to unravel the circumstances that led to the pogrom in Zaria and its environs, it believes that the events of December 12, 2015 that led to the massacre of its members, the maiming of hundreds, the detention of its cadres and destruction of its properties are premeditated.

The movement added that the Federal and Kaduna State Governments are in face saving mode regarding the gross human rights violations that it deliberately perpetrated.

“The Movement will appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry only on the following conditions: That the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria should be released unconditionally. The Nigerian Government is holding the leader of the Movement incommunicado knowing that he is the custodian of the documents of the Movement and has to give direction to the Movement in the preparation of its Memorandum and the assembling of its witnesses.

“The Nigerian Military and the Nigerian Police must make a full disclosure of the number of persons in their various detention centers and grant lawyers of the Movement access to most of them. This is because the Movement has credible evidence that a large number of its members are still in detention in military facilities and detention centers,” the statement asserted.

The statement added that the Kaduna State Government and the Kaduna State Police Command must disclose the number of persons it has charged to court and the number of persons it has in prison custody

I won’t reconcile with Igbinedion —Oshiomhole

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has said that he may not reconcile his differences with the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, because the latter allegedly disrespected his office by seeing himself as bigger than the entire Edo State.

Oshiomhole spoke when he visted Chief Igbinedion’s ancestral home in Okada, Ovia North-East Local Government Area, where he commissioned class room blocks at Iguomo and a three-storey office complex which was named after the governor.

The projects were executed by the chairman of the council, Mrs Lucy Omagbon. The governor, who was responding to a plea by a leader of the community that the governor should reconcile with Chief Igbinedion, said that he had no problem with Chief Igbinedion but that his duty as governor of the state was to protect both the rich and the poor, adding that it was in the discharge of such duties that he had issues with Igbinedion.

According to him, “I heard the Chairman talking about my quarrel with Igbinedion. I have no problem with anybody. There are only four levels of government, federal, state, local and traditional institution. The House of Igbinedion does not belong to any of this. He is a chief and I respect him as a chief but he must respect constituted authorities, the office of the governor of Edo State. This governor cannot be harassed, he cannot be blackmailed. And I stand ready to defend that office.”

To Prevent Lassa Fever, Families and Especially Students Need to Stop Drinking Garri For Now – Medical Expert

The Medical and Health Workers Union, Lagos State council, on Saturday, said that it would embark on public enlightenment to discourage drinking of garri for now to prevent Lassa fever.

Mr Razak Adeofalade, Chairman of the union, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. According to him, the house rats that cause Lassa fever are mostly in contact with Nigerian most staple food, garri, a cassava product.

“We are going to encourage members of the public to stop drinking garri at this moment, it is better that the cassava flour is utilised for ‘eba’ because of the use of hot water. We are waging total war and that is: ‘War against Rats,’ and that is what we are going to do to ensure we do not have another victim of Lassa fever in the state.

“We will also be telling them to ensure that their fruits and raw vegetables are properly washed if they must be consumed raw and cook to the appropriate temperature.

The whole essence is to enlighten our people because education carries a lot of weight in this whole activity,” he said.

“I have read several accounts of the unfortunate incident regarding the unauthorized appropriation of the intellectual property rights in the sound recording I had made sometime in 2014 by Mr. Tunde Ednut.

Contrary to the spin in the media, I never at any point engaged in any studio session with Mr. Tunde Ednut regarding the sound recording. The original sound recording was indeed created by me with Wande Coal providing freestyle vocals on it and I have attached a link of the original version in this release.

Kindly note that further to painstaking enquiries, I have discovered that Masterkraft was not in anyway complicit in the alleged theft of the IP rights as Mr. Tunde Ednut with malicious intent omitted to mention to Masterkraft my ownership rights in the recording.

I have no intention to engage in a public trade of words with Mr. Tunde Ednut, which is why I had instructed my lawyers to take the appropriate actions. It is my profound belief that a workman is deserving of the appropriate benefits to his works and it is high time we started according to intellectual property rights, the respect and regards they duly deserve.

While thanking the media house and blogs that have supported my brand and have reached out to me since the news of the IP conversion broke, I urge them to refrain from posting or reposting the infringing song and its video thereby engendering the continued criminal misappropriation of my IP rights pending the outcome of the law suit to be filed by my lawyers should Mr. Tunde Ednut and his cohorts not desist from their condemnable actions.
Thank you for your understanding.

From bats to rats as Lassa takes off where Ebola stoped

IN an ironical twist of fate, West Africa has been declared free of the two-year Ebola epidemic just as the sub-region is facing a renewed disease epidemic threat in the guise of Lassa fever. For most West Africans, particularly Nigerians that had an unpalatable taste of the devastating Ebola outbreak, it isn’t yet time to heave a sigh of relief. The West African Ebola outbreak was the worst in history. Between December 2013 and November 2015, Ebola infected almost 29,000 people and claimed 11,315 lives across the sub-region and even beyond.

Nigeria recorded nine deaths out of a total of 20 confirmed Ebola cases. On Thursday, Liberia, the worst Ebola-hit country with 4,800 deaths, got the all-clear from the World Health Organisation. West Africa is Ebola free, but no one can heave a sigh of relief because Lassa fever is taking over where Ebola has left off. And it has begun with Nigeria.

Like a bad dream, Lassa fever has turned up in Nigeria for the third time within a decade. Since the last quarter of 2015, the country has been battling the epidemic disorder, which at the last count, has reached 10 states and killed 43 people. More than 400 suspected cases have so far been recorded in the Borno, Gombe, Yobe, Taraba, Plateau, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Edo, Ondo, Rivers, Anambra, Lagos and the FCT out of which around 90 cases have been confirmed.

Last week, the Federal government created the Lassa Fever Rapid Response Committee, whose goal is to control and prevent the spread of the disease. Public health officials have also asked Nigerians to stop burning bushes as this drives rats out of the bush and into nearby houses. Also just like Ebola, health care workers are predominantly infected and likely to die from Lassa fever infection, most often due to poor medical practices, late diagnosis, and treatment. The federal government has quickly stepped in with series of measures.

GOVT BANS CONSUMPTION OF RATS

It has placed a ban on consumption of rats that are a delicacy common to some states in the Middle Belt region of the country to curtail the spread of the disorder. Now it’s from Ebola fever to Lassa fever. In effect, what this translates to is from bats to rats! What can be good about rats? Nothing is the simple straight answer, except if one considers that they eat garbage. Rats are associated with dirty, smelly and unhygienic environments such as compost heaps, gutters, sewers and the like. When people think of rats what come to mind are pictures that are disgusting, dirty, and creepy.

But, bad as rats are, they live right alongside humans, eating the food, damaging household and office furniture, and leave droppings and urine markings all over the place. Rats are parasites because they live off humans without providing anything of worth”, in other words, rats are good for nothing and nothing is good about rats.

ORIGIN

Unlike Ebola, Lassa fever is not new to Nigerians. The first ever documented case of Lassa fever was reported in Nigeria in 1969 when two missionary nurses died in a town called Lassa in the part of Nigeria now known as Borno State . They had complaints of weakness, headaches, fever and general malaise. An acute viral illness, Lassa fever has so far claimed 43 lives from just under 100 reported cases in 10 states of the country and the FCT.

Ebola fever and Lassa fever share so many common characteristics, they could be described as siblings, however, they are essentially different illnesses. They are classified as haemorrhagic fevers, because they cause severe haemorrhaging in victims. Both are caused by viruses that belong to the same Arenaviridae virus family. The Ebola and Lassa viruses are zoonotic in nature and of Africa origin.

BETWEEN EBOLA AND LASSA

While the Ebola virus lives mainly in the fruit bat, it is the “soft-furred rat” (multimammate rat) also known as Mastomys natalensis, that carries the Lassa virus. These rats are widespread throughout the West African region, breed frequently and bear many offspring, increasing the potential for spread of the virus from rats to humans. They are often found in human homes and transmission through contaminated food is common, as the rats usually leave urine and excrements in food stores.

TRANSMISSION AND SYMPTOMS

Just like the Ebola virus, the Lassa virus is transmitted through close contact with the virus host or the sweat, vomit, blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person, or the recently deceased. Both cause severe fever and muscle pain, weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea. In many cases they shut down organs and cause unstoppable internal bleeding. Patients often succumb within 3-21 days.

But unlike Ebola, Lassa is different because it is treatable with Ribavirin – an antiviral drug, that is only effective if administered within the first six days after the disease onset. Lassa fever patients also benefit from careful monitoring of fluid, electrolyte and oxygen levels.

People usually become infected with Lassa virus from exposure to infected rodents. Person-to-person transmission occurs through direct contact with sick patients in both community and health care settings. Those at greatest risk are persons living in rural areas where Mastomys are found. Health care workers are at risk if adequate infection control practices are not maintained.

Last week, the Nigerian federal government created the Lassa Fever Rapid Response Committee, whose goal is to control and prevent the spread of the disease. Public health officials have also asked Nigerians to stop burning bushes as this drives rats out of the bush and into nearby houses.

Humans usually become infected with Lassa virus from exposure to urine or faeces of infected Mastomys rats. Lassa virus may also be spread between humans through direct contact with the blood, urine, faeces, or other bodily secretions of a person infected with Lassa fever. There is no epidemiological evidence supporting airborne spread between humans. Person-to-person transmission occurs in both community and health-care settings, where the virus may be spread by contaminated medical equipment, such as re-used needles. Sexual transmission of Lassa virus has been reported.

Lassa fever occurs in all age groups and both sexes. Persons at greatest risk are those living in rural areas where Mastomys are usually found, especially in communities with poor sanitation or crowded living conditions. Health workers are at risk if caring for Lassa fever patients in the absence of proper barrier nursing and infection control practices.

The furry rat , once infected, is able to excrete virus in urine for an extended time period, maybe for the rest of its life. The typical rodents breed frequently, produce large numbers of offspring, and are numerous in the savannas and forests of west, central, and east Africa. They readily colonize human homes and areas where food is stored. It is known that worldwide, rats spread diseases directly and indirectly. An example of direct transmission is the rat’s habit of “urine marking” for sexual advertisement and habitat labelling. This leaves tiny tell-tale droplets all over surfaces.

RATS SHARE FOOD AND SHELTER WITH MAN

To sum it up in the words of the CDC: “Rodents destroy property, spread disease, compete for human food sources, and are aesthetically displeasing”. They are clearly not one of the most beloved animals. Rats consume untold tons of refuse every year, leaving less waste. Some estimates say there is one rat for every human in big cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and others. That may be too many rats to think about, there are actually hundreds of millions roaming around Lagos alone.

Rodents share food and shelter with man. They are parasites in the workplaces, restaurants, hospitals, schools, food processing plants and especially the homes. They share the food and the furniture and home. They will use plumbing voids as well as circulation vents to travel from one part of a home/building to another. It is this habit that assures the spread of contaminated nesting material, faeces, and urine and body hairs.

They destroy property, spread disease, compete for human food sources, and are aesthetically displeasing. As long as there is garbage to get rid of, man will not be getting rid of rats soon Rats have been responsible for some of the most devastating disease outbreaks known. Medical literature says rats and mice could spread about 55 different diseases. Lassa fever Lyme disease, Typhus and the Plague are just a few.

Human behaviour could be a major contributing factor in the transmission of deadly infections such as Ebola and Lassa fever, based on interactions between humans, domestic animals, wildlife and the environment. A school of thought is convinced that humans need to not just consider rats as the villains, because ultimately humans are just as much the villains as rats. These are other factors could ultimately contribute to the relatively efficient spread of Lassa virus from infected rodents to humans. Oh yes, it’s hard to find anything good to say about rats!

Group to INEC: Withdraw Bello’s certificate, declare Faleke governor

A Northern group under the aegis of The Northern Patriots & Progressives Alliance, NPPA has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Yahaya Bello and return Hon James Faleke as the duly elected governor of Kogi State. The group argued that, the spirit behind nominating a running mate before conduct of an election should be considered and the running mate to the deceased candidate be declared winner. NPPA in a press release signed by its Publicity Secretary, Dr. Gabriel Adams in Kaduna, feared that though, suits filed by aggrieved interests remains the only legitimate option towards amicable resolution of the disputes because parties involved (the INEC, APC, WADA & FALEKE) all acted based on respective established laws, outcome of the litigations may create another lacuna. According to the group, “while we all await judicial proclamations and without prejudice to the ongoing judicial process on the Kogi matter, but for the benefit of clarity, we like to draw the attentions of those saying the constitution of Nigerian did not envisage the Kogi scenario to the spirit behind nominating a running mate before conduct of an election. “Thus, if the experience of the last governorship election in Kogi State was truly unanticipated by the constitution as presented in certain quarters, nomination to the position of vice or deputy as the case maybe would have taken the form of appointment after elections are concluded. “But since the electoral law provided for a presidential or governorship candidate to produce a running mate to be eligible to contest such election, it becomes a case which must be given serious consideration. “As a group that firmly believes and is committed to the principle of democracy and the rules of law, we hasten to use this medium to urge INEC to be courageous and magnanimous enough to withdraw the Certificate of Return earlier issued Yahaya Bello and return Hon James Faleke as the duly elected governor of Kogi State. “This is in order to avert unwarranted and prolonged litigation likely to create another political lacuna, which is similar to the case of former Governor Ibrahim Idris whom, rather than a tenure of a total of eight years spent over nine years in office at the expense of tax payers in Kogi State. “Accordingly, the spirit behind nomination of a running mate before and not after conduct of an election as highlighted above must necessarily be considered to amicably resolve this matter. “After all, electoral votes are usually in favour of the party and not the candidate as was the case involving former Governor Amaechi and Omehia in River State judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. “For the records, the Northern Patriots and Progressives Alliance is a group dedicated to the ideals of democracy, cultural revival, sustainable peace, security, the administration of social justice across northern Nigeria also known as Arewa. “In conclusion, this group likes to call on all stakeholders particularly the aggrieved to eschew personal interests or primordial sentiments on matters that concern the citizens and the development of our society. “We must therefore at all times develop a discerning mind to help vulnerable amongst us understand beyond official definition of every political action. This is the only way to guarantee meaningful democracy and aspirations for a worthy future. It’s all about the common sense as Distinguished Senator Ben Murray Bruce would always say,” the group stated

Ikorodu Carnival Turns Bloody As Cultists Kill Graduate

A graduate, identified only as Usman, and another victim have been shot dead by suspected cultists during a carnival in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the graduate, and the other victim, identified simply as Abija, were initially attacked with axes, but they managed to escape.

Their assailants chased and reportedly caught up with them on Itun-Meko Street and shot them dead.

Our correspondent gathered that the attack, which happened on Tuesday at about 5am, was caused by supremacy battle among rival cults in the area.

Policemen from the Ikorodu division were said to have arrived at the scene to remove the corpses, while efforts to arrest the hoodlums reportedly failed.

When PUNCH Metro visited Itun-Meko Street, a resident, who identified himself only as Phillip, said Usman came to the carnival from the neighbouring Anibaba area, which is believed to be the base of a rival gang.

He said, “The two of them came to the carnival from the Anibaba area. This street is ruled by a rival cult. The carnival had almost ended and the two of them were leaving when the hoodlums chased them.

“The boys escaped with cuts, but at the Itun-Meko Street junction, they were shot dead. Their bodies were taken away in a police van. Usman was a university graduate, and Abija was his friend.”

A shop owner, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there had been gunshots on every evening since the day of the killings on Itun-Meko Street.

He said, “The carnival was a gathering of cult boys. The police should not allow such carnivals. But the hoodlums were able to bring some policemen who were around to monitor the event. The policemen had left when they started trouble. Their anger with the two men was that why would they come to attend their carnival when they belonged to an area controlled by a rival group?

“Since that Tuesday, there have been gunshots every evening.”

A security source in the area told PUNCH Metro that hoodlums from the Anibaba area had also killed two persons from Itun-Meko Street after the Tuesday violence in a reprisal.

Efforts to get Usman’s family members were not successful as of press time.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the killings, said the police recovered three axes, mobile phones and motorcycles used by the cultists which would assist in fishing them out.

She said, “There is no arrest for now. But during the chase by the police, the suspects abandoned three axes, motorcycles and their phones. We are working on these, and we will fish out the killers very soon.”

Memorise: Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.  – Exodus 32:26

Read: John 21:1-6 (KJV)

1 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.

2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.

3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

Being on the wrong side of life is very dangerous. Many things go wrong when you are not in the right place. My prayer for someone using this devotional is that you will never be on the wrong side of life in Jesus’ name. And if you are on the wrong side already, may the Lord move you to the right side of life in Jesus’ name.

In the Bible reading for today, we read about the disciples’ encounter with the resurrected Jesus at the sea of Tiberias. They toiled throughout the night and caught nothing. When Jesus came to them, they did not recognize Him. Jesus teased them and asked “Children, have ye any meat?” The answer was obviously negative. When you are not where you should be, you are on the wrong side and this can bring untold sorrow and lack. The compassionate Jesus then issued a directive that they should throw their net on the “right side” of the ship for a catch. Amazingly, they caught a multitude of fishes. One lesson we must learn from this story is that every child of God must find out which is the right side to be. In Genesis, we read about the wrong side Lot went to when he separated himself from Abraham.

“10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. 11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.” - Genesis 13:10-11

Lot greedily chose the land that seemed good for his flock without considering his elder uncle who gave him the option to choose first. Unfortunately, it was the wrong side; it was a place that was marked for destruction, after Lot had become “successful”, the iniquity of that land brought total destruction upon it and Lot took nothing out of the land. As a matter of fact, he lost his wife in the land.

“24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. 26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.” - Genesis 19:24-26

Beloved, the side of the Lord is the right side. Jesus said: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Come to the Lord’s side today if you are yet to answer His call. Repent and accept Him as your Lord and Saviour. He will prosper you and give you all-round rest as He has promised.

Prayer Point: Father, please take me away from the wrong side of life and bring me to the right side.

Did Wizkid Actually Break A Bottle On Dammy Krane’s Head At Club Quilox Earlier This Morning?

Talk about the streets. This street thing will get a lot of people into problems o, lol. Even the ‘butters’ too are claiming streets, it is well. So after Dammy Krane called Wizkid out on Twitter calling him a thief for stealing few of his songs, the duo met early hours of this morning at Club Quilox where football star Obafemi Martins was hosted to an All Black Party and they said a mini war started when the two saw eye to eye. According to TheNetng who broke the news, Wizkid came into the club house at around 4:00am but Dammy Krane and others had earlier been there. He didn’t say a word to Krane, but shortly after seeing him, sources claim Krane gave him an attitude and Wizkid walked up to his table and broke a bottle on his head. The two young acts where quickly separated by bouncers before the fight could escalate.

Shina Peller, the club owner later walked in, summoned the two parties to his office and settled the matter. Mschew, this settling of matters the same day is a bit annoying o, that’s how they won’t let us have diss tracks. Imagine a whole lot of people waiting to hear Olamide’s diss track against Mavin’s boss and how Mavin will respond? Shior. Their industry is too boring, they should stop forming baby gangsters…. Smh  Lool.

GOBE Police Arraign Exxonmobil Engineer for Alleged Rape (Photo)

The Zone 2 Police Command has arraigned 42-year-old James Onuoha at an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

OnuohaHe was arraigned on four counts of rape and indecent assault.

The Chief Magistrate, O.A. Ogunbowale, however, admitted him to bail in the sum of N2m with two sureties in like sum, adding that he should be remanded in the Kirikiri Prison pending the perfection of his bail.

PUNCH Metro had reported that the suspect, who was an engineer with ExxonMobil, had visited the victim’s guardian.

Onuoha, who was the landlord of the house, allegedly entered the room and engaged the 14-year-old
in a conversation after which he allegedly raped her.

The matter was reported at the Lamgbasa Police Division before it was transferred to the Zone 2 Police Command.

The police arraigned him on Thursday.

The Investigating Police Officer, Stephen Agbonedeso, said the incident happened on Samuel Amoore Street, Idowu Estate, Oke-Ira Nla, Ajah.

The charges read in part:

“That you, Onuoha James, on January 4, 2016, at about 11.30am, on Samuel Amoore Street, Idowu Estate, Oke-Ira Nla, Ajah, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, willfully did an indecent act to one (name withheld), thereby committing an offence.

“That you did have unlawful sexual intercourse with one (name withheld) without her consent, thereby committing an offence.”

The police prosecutor, Inspector Asu Feddy, said the offences were punishable under sections 134, 258, 135 and 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected summary trial.

His defence counsel asked for his bail in liberal terms, arguing that the offence was bailable.

The chief magistrate, Ogunbowale, admitted him to bail in the sum of N2m with two sureties in like sum, adding that he should be remanded in the Kirikiri Prison pending the perfection of his bail terms.

She adjourned the case till February 23 for the release of the legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The Director of the Office of the Public Defender, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, who expressed displeasure at the bail, said the magistrate should not have heard the matter in the first place.

She said the Lagos State Government had taken up the case and would ensure that justice was served.

Rotimi said:

“We have been involved in this case from the onset and it is very inappropriate for the magistrate, who acknowledged that the case was not within her purview, to grant bail. You said something is not within your jurisdiction, and you still granted bail. Why hear it at all?
“The Attorney General of Justice has taken up the case and we will follow it to the end.”

Buhari’s aide gave us fake 2016 budget – Senate

Rumblings over whereabouts of the 2016 Budget proposal of the Federal Government in the Senate came to a climax yesterday as the Senate accused the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Senate), Senator Ita Enang of doctoring and circulating fake copies of the budget proposals.

In defence of its integrity, the Senate vowed not to work on the fake proposals allegedly circulated by Enang until it receives an electronic copy of the budget document which will be reproduced for senators.

Vanguard also learned yesterday that the same alteration of the budget document was done in the House of Representatives, but House officials were quick to intercept the doctoring and insist on the circulation of the original proposals as submitted by the President.

Circumstances around the budget document became an issue last Tuesday when it emerged that the proposal as submitted by the President could no longer be traced. The discovery prompted the Senate into a closed-door session following which the Senate Committee on Ethics was mandated to investigate the issue. The issue also led the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday afternoon.

Senator Saraki yesterday confirmed the doctoring of the budget proposals by Enang at the end of deliberations on the report of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions on the issue. Saraki added that the available hard copy of the budget presented to the Senate was different from the one laid before the two chambers of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari, shortly before both chambers embarked on Yuletide break last December. Senate officials, however, shied away from pointing out the differences between the two copies yesterday.

File: Ita Enang (left) during the presentation of the 2016 budget by President Buhari to the National Assembly.

Senator Saraki nevertheless, said the report of the committee fingered the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Enang, for the act. He said the Senate would as such suspend its initial plan to begin consideration of the 2016 appropriation bill until the Presidency submits the soft copy of the original budget that was laid before the two chambers of the legislature. His words:

“We have received the report of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions on investigations surrounding 2016 Appropriation Bill. Our finding is that Senator Ita Enang, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang printed copies of the 2016 Appropriation Bill and brought to the Senate.

“We have discovered that what he brought is different from the version presented by Mr President. We have resolved to consider only the version presented by Mr President as soon as we receive soft copy of the original document from the executive.”

‘Budget not missing’
But briefing newsmen, after the day’s plenary, Senate spokesperson, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, said, “The report about a missing budget is not true. We don’t have a budget that is missing. But you recall that the Senate President did inform Nigerians that there is an issue that a committee was asked to investigate. The investigation by the committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, has been submitted in the executive session. It was a decision we took at the last executive session.

“Our findings are these: That Mr. President did lay the budget before the joint session of the National Assembly and thereafter, the Senate went on recess and upon resumption, copies of the document were produced by Senator Ita Enang, who is the SSA to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate) and the copies were submitted to the Senate and House of Representatives.

“What we found out is that the document submitted by Senator Ita Enang, upon our resumption, has some differences, discrepancies with what was originally laid by Mr. President in the joint sitting of the National Assembly.

“However, the Senate in defence of its own integrity, honour, will not work with what has not been laid on the floor of the National Assembly. We are constitutionally mandated and duty bound to consider only that budget that had been so laid by Mr President.

“Right now, for reproduction, we are awaiting the soft copy of the originally submitted budget so that the National Assembly can reproduce the copy itself. That is the only time we can have confidence in the document we want to work with.

“The budget submitted by the President is not missing; we already have copies of it but what we are saying is that for us to reproduce for our members, it is easier, based on the quantum of document that has to be produced, that we get the soft copy of that original version so that we can reproduce it. ‘“

He disclosed that the Senate has fixed Tuesday, next week to discuss the budget, saying copies of the document would be circulated to senators when the soft copy demanded from the presidency was received.

“By next week, we want to go down to business, senators have picked dates to speak during the three days set aside for debate on the 2016 budget.

“The Senate leadership was mandated to speak with all those concerned with the document, that was why the Senate President was in touch with Mr President.”

Abdullahi refused to speak on the claims by the House of Representatives that it had its own original version of the document.

“I am not in the position to say the differences between the document submitted by the President and the one brought by Ita Enang. The committee that investigated the issue did not include that in their report.

“As at the time the Senate President promised to make copies available to senators today (Thursday), he was working on the assumption that what was brought by the executive were copies of the original copies submitted by Mr President, but based on the outcry, it was discovered that there is another version different from what the President gave us,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Enang, who is at the centre of the development, has refused to comment on the level of his involvement, as alleged by the Senate.

Enang told journalists who sought his view on the matter that he would not join issues with senators.

“I have chosen not to comment on this issue for personal reasons.

‘’We must work together to make the Senate as an institution to grow. The President is my boss and the senators are my bosses. I won’t join issues with them. So, let the whole matter remain as it is”, he said

No country would give free money — Ngige

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, yesterday, said that the stipend of N5,000 promised by the government of All Progressives Congress, APC, for unemployed youths was not for the indolent people.

He said that no country would give free money, stressing that Nigeria would not be an exception.

Speaking to journalists yesterday at the national secretariat of the APC in Abuja, Ngige, however, revealed that the Federal Government would ensure that the youths were trained in various skills and programmes to justify the money.

He added that the project would also involve the state governments.

According to him, there will be categories of people, who would earn higher than the N5,000.

“We also have the programme on the commission cash transfer. Though even you, the press, has said it,  we won’t pay N5,000 for people to be indolent. No country in the world would pay people to go home and sleep and collect cash. So, Nigeria would not be an exception.

“We will pay some people N5,000, we will pay some N10,000, and even for people in teacher conversion scheme, we will pay more than N10,000 and N15,000 as stipend while in training, and then after the training, they are going to be employed by state government and the Federal Government in different institutions.

“It is not a programme we shall run alone, the state governments are going to buy into it. They are going to synchronize with us.We are going to do it in synergy.”

Ngige also stated that some of the programmes will “span through Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Labour.

“Agriculture, because we have some agricultural universities, we will convert some people to teach the relevant agricultural science.”

The minister who stated that Nigeria has various skill acquisition centers also underscored the importance of training the youth.

“The ministry has specialist skills acquisition centres; we have seven like that in the ministry under the commissioner of skills or directorate for skills.

“The NDE have over 120 centres scattered all over the country. We also have those that have been built by state government and we want to capture all of these into that scheme and then get people to the scheme to be bricklayers,  POP designers, builders, welders, electronics repairers and the one they called mecha-tronic, repair of vehicles, automobile carpentry, painting and fabrication of all sorts.”

EFCC’s eagerness to arraign Tompolo suspicious —Ijaw group

THE Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPDI, Warri, Delta State, has said that the hyperactive attempt by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to arraign the leader of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, in court, was to serve the private interests of some scheming persons.

*Tompolo

National President of the group, Austin Ozobo, told Vanguard on phone, “It is palpable that the court summons demanding Tompolo’s compulsory appearance does not serve the best interest of the country, it was meant to serve the personal interests of some unscrupulous elements.

“In the first instance, he did not receive the summons in question even as at Wednesday and could not have appeared in court the next day, Thursday. The people who orchestrated the affair know he would not appear in court on Thursday. They have a hidden agenda.

“This is simply an attempt to witch-hunt him politically. We condemn the flagrant threats to declare Tompolo wanted, which is the next plan.

“It is a fact that the judiciary is no longer independent. President Muhammadu Buhari now controls the judiciary, they should go ahead and make any order that suits him.”

IPDI, however, advised, “The government in our opinion should harmonize Tompolo’s many contributions as regards the sustainable peace in the Niger Delta and not upset him with flimsy accusations.

“Oil supply in this country was cut down to 500 barrels from 2.5 million barrels per day and Tompolo yielded to former Presidents Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan’s call and accepted amnesty and today, the daily crude supply has increased to 2.8 million barrels.

“From when he accepted amnesty till now, he has been helpful to government at various levels in maintaining law and order. So, it is left for the current government to decide what it wants to do, to continue to witch-hunt him for political reasons or act otherwise.”

Alleged N400m fraud: EFCC files 7-count charge against Metuh

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, preferred seven-count criminal charge against detained National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh.

Metuh

Metuh and his firm, Destra Investment Limited, were charged before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court over alleged N400 million fraud.

The charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/05/2016, was signed by the Assistant Director, Legal & Prosecution Department of the EFCC, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir.

The filing process was perfected, yesterday, by EFCC lead prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, SAN. The charge against Metuh borders on alleged money laundering, breach of trust and criminal diversion of public funds.

Specifically, EFCC, alleged that Metuh had in November 2014, collected N400 million from the erstwhile National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki, (retd).

The fund, which was withdrawn from an account of the Office of the NSA operated with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, was allegedly transferred to Metuh through account no. 0040437573, which Destra Investments Limited operated with Diamond Bank Plc.

EFCC insisted that whereas the fund was earmarked for campaign activities of the PDP, it said Metuh diverted most of it to his personal use. It alleged that Metuh converted part of the money to $1 million which he used for his personal business.

Besides, Metuh was alleged to have transferred N21.7 million to another chieftain of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih.

18 witnesses to testify against Metuh

Already, the anti-graft agency has lined up 18 witnesses that will testify against Metuh and his firm before the high court.

Among those to testify in the case are representatives of the Office of the NSA, representatives of Diamond Bank, Access Bank, Sterling Bank, FirstBank, Heritage Bank, Nneka Nicole Ararume, Alhaji Abba Dabo, Mallam Kabiru Ibrahim, Olayinka Badejo Okusanya of CMC Comet, Ahmadu Umar of Kwalaye Investment Limited, Theophilus Musa of Capital Fields Investment and six EFCC investigators.

Though the charge against Metuh has not been assigned to any judge for his arraignment, however, Justice Okon Abang, yesterday, adjourned till January 20 to hear the suit challenging the continued detention of the PDP spokesman in EFCC custody.

Justice Abang adjourned hearing on Metuh’s fundamental right enforcement suit on a day the EFCC insisted that his detention was sequel to a valid court order.

Detention sequel to valid court order

—EFCC

Counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Jacobs, SAN, maintained that the commission obtained a remand order against Metuh in line with provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

Jacobs said the ACJA, 2015, permitted the EFCC to detain an accused person pending completion of investigation into criminal allegations against such person, so far there is a valid approval from a competent court.

He said: “It is arrant nonsense for anybody or group to say that the suspect is being detained illegally for political reasons. EFCC is established by law and as such, cannot take the laws into its hand. The truth is that there is a valid and subsisting court order that permitted the detention of the man.

“The order was issued by the court based on the avalanche of documentary evidence that was placed before it.”

The EFCC lawyer told the court, yesterday, that the commission would need time to study Metuh’s fundamental right enforcement suit which he said was only served on the anti-graft agency Wednesday morning.

Arguing that EFCC still have five days to respond to Me tuh’s suit, Jacobs, yesterday, persuaded Justice Abang to adjourn the matter which he said was not ripe for hearing.

Even though Metuh, through his lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe, SAN, urged the court to abridge the time within which the EFCC could respond to the suit, Justice Abang, yesterday, declined the prayer.

Adedipe accused the EFCC of not only detaining his client illegally, but also failed to arraign him within the time stipulated by the law.

He contended that the anti-graft agency ought to have concluded its investigations before arresting an accused person.

Meanwhile, some of the charges that were filed gainst Metuh yesterday read: \’That you, Olisa Metuh and Destra Investment Limited, on or about the 24th November, 2014, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, took possession of the sum of N400, 000,000.00 (Four Hundred Million Naira) only, paid into the account of Destra Investments Limited with Diamond Bank Plc. 7Die As Explosions Rock Jakarta This Morning

At least seven people have been killed in a series of coordinated bomb and gun attacks in central Jakarta, Indonesia as blasts rang out of the capital's downtown area this morning.

An unknown number of people were injured in the security operations at the Sarinah shopping complex on Thamrin Street in Jakarta's central district. Police said the attack has ended and that security forces were in control of the area.

Earlier police reports said five gunmen were killed and that another five policemen and seven civilians were also dead. Police later revised the toll to a total of seven, including four attackers.

All six blasts occurred about 50 metres apart in the central business district, which also houses a United Nations office.

Earlier, tweets from the account of Jeremy Douglas, regional representative of the UN office on Drugs and Crime for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, described a bomb and "serious" exchanges of gunfire on the street outside his office. A police post was also destroyed in a grenade blast.

Best Way To Argue With Your Partner According To Psychologist Who Studied Couples For Decades

When’s the last time you really got into it with your significant other? After the yelling was done, did your mind swirl with ideas about what you should have said? Or perhaps about what you should not have said?

Here’s the good news: Not only can you most likely rectify the situation, but also knowing how to approach the argument next time can mean you and your partner have a more productive — and perhaps less volatile — “discussion.”

Productive arguments, in fact, are one of the things that appear to distinguish couples who stay together from those who split, according to research from several psychologists, including University of Washington psychology professor John Gottman, founder of the Gottman Institute, an organization dedicated to studying and improving relationships.

Together with University of California at Berkeley psychologist Robert Levenson, Gottman conducted a 14-year study of 79 married couples living across the US Midwest.

Among the couples they studied, 21 ended up divorcing over the more than decade-long period. But among those who stuck it out, Gottman and Levenson noticed some key things about their relationships, including how they fought. Here are some of the key takeaways:

How couples who stay together argue

1. They stabilize a rocking boat.

Among the couples who split, the vast majority took far longer to address a recent argument than those who stayed together, often leaving each other to stew in individual thoughts for hours or days after a fight, Gottman told Business Insider. Conversely, couples who stayed together would typically discuss their arguments almost immediately after they’d happened.

Picture yourself and your partner in a boat, Gottman suggested. Now imagine that the emotions you and your partner are feeling are represented by the sea around you. A small argument stirs the waters a bit and gets the boat rocking. But a quick effort to stabilize the boat — with an open conversation or an apology — can be all that’s required to get you back to smooth sailing.

Waiting around, on the other hand, only strengthens the waves. And waiting too long, he said, can lead to disaster.

To calm a rocking boat, Gottman suggests you and your partner talk immediately and openly about what just happened. This requires recognizing that both of you are partially responsible for the problem and both of you are responsible for making amends.

2. They allow the other person to be heard.

Another characteristic of couples who later divorced that Gottman observed is that they’d frequently cut off discussions about a conflict prematurely with unhelpful, insensitive comments. But strong couples tended to consistently approach one another with an open mind, taking responsibility for their actions and listening to what their partner had to say.

So if, in the middle of an argument, you stop your partner to them they’re being illogical, you’re probably doing it wrong.

“If you tell someone they’re not being logical or say something like ‘you’re getting off track,’ it just doesn’t work. It makes people angry,” said Gottman. Instead, saying something like: “I can see that this is really important to you; tell me more” allows the other person to feel heard.
